Dentist, Moms and Kids love Xylitol Candy!

Xylitol CandyI am a dentist with a sweet tooth!

My favorite candies were hot tamales (so sticky!) and raisinettes until I found that my children were following my lead!  Sugary candies stick to teeth and promote tooth decay.  Plus, my children go bonkers after eating lots of candy.  So, where can you find a sweet yummy candy that mom can say yes to every time?  Healthykisses.com!

Have you given your child candy and watched them zoom into a sugar high?

Xylitol will NOT cause a sugar high or a sugar crash!

Yep! Calm, healthy, and delicious!  Unlike sugar, Xylitol slowly absorbs into the blood stream keeping your kiddo healthy, happy, and calm!  This makes Xylitol diabetic friendly too!

Xylitol is popular amongst moms who want to say yes to sweet candy..without the guilt!

Turn that frown upside down!  My kids hate it when I say no!  Now I say yes to Candy! We are all happy!!

When your child wants a sweet treat offer them a xylitol candy.  Kids don’t notice these sweet treats are healthy, natural, and good for teeth too.

Kids exclaim, Yum!  Can I have some more!

Finally, mama, you can say yes with a smile when your child asks, “Mom can I have some candy?”

Bus Stop Boogie

Can’t get your kids to cooperate in the morning?

It’s 7am and its time to get the kiddos out the door.  In my house getting my kids to eat breakfast and dressed to walk out the door is challenging.  I certainly left their toothbrushes, with toothpaste, ready to go on the countertop but, did they use them?

Running out of time for personal and oral hygiene!

Even though I am a dentist, I can admit that my children have run down the stairs and out the door without brushing their teeth.  EEWWW .. I know GRoss!   Bad breath and fuzzy yellow teeth represents me well! So I started thinking what is a simple solution to help out this stressful situation?

Clean teeth on the go

Chew gum on the way to school.  Yes, this dentist says chewing sugar-free Xylitol gum is great for teeth.  Chewing gum stimulates saliva flow to swish away food particles.  Xylitol  works to reduce harmful mouth bacteria and pH balance saliva.  Chewing gum also rubs up against teeth to wipe away sticky plaque .

Choose the right Kind of Chewing Gum

Of course choosing the right kind of chewing gum to support your childs oral health is important.  Mama, I know your busy and are happy to learn that I’ve done the legwork for you.

Dr. Stacy recommends Xylitol chewing gum.natural gum and mints purchased

Xylitol is natural.  Sounds like a chemical, I know.  But it’s not. Xylitol comes from birch trees, corn , fruits, and we make it in our bodies too.  Xylitol helps rid the mouth of harmful bacteria. Xylitol helps protect teeth from cavities and reduces plaque buildup…the fuzzy yellow stuff!

Canker Sores a.k.a. Apthous Ulcer

canker-sore

Canker sores are open sores in the mouth.  Usually they appear as small round white spots with bright red irritated tissue around it.

Canker sores may be caused by:

  • dyes, alcohol and other irritants in dental products
  • stress
  • vitamin and mineral deficiencies –  Vit. B12, Iron, Zinc, Folic Acid
  • hormonal changes,
  • food allergies
  • Unhealthy bacteria in the mouth
  • Sometimes cause is unknown

Canker sores are not contagious and are not a cold sore. Canker sores may be hereditary or common in families due to shared allergies. Canker sores seem to affect women more than men

Canker sores are sensitive to the touch and are usually painful when you eat.   Avoid eating spicy foods. It can take approximately 7-10 days for a canker sore to heal and the pain to go away.  Some sores may take longer to heal.   Canker sores usually go away on their on.

Unhealthy bacteria in the mouth can irritate Canker sores and trigger an immune reaction.  It’s very important to have excellent oral health and a proper balance of healthy bacteria in your mouth.

To support  the growth of healthy bacteria and help prevent the occurrence of irritated canker sores try using alcohol free, dye free, and all natural mouth rinses and oral care products.

There are creams, ointments and other products available to soothe the pain.  Home remedies include mixing equal parts of hydrogen peroxide and water and applying the mixture on the canker sore.  Then, place a little bit of Milk of Magnesia on the canker sore to sooth and help to heal the wound.  Repeat this three to four times a day.

What is Dental Plaque?

A smooth sticky creamy clump of bacteria

We develop new dental plaque every day

Sticky Plaque forms at the gum line, between the teeth, and under the gums

Harmful cavity causing bacteria live in dental plaque.

Plaque sticks to your teeth and must be removed daily.

If Plaque is not removed daily it will spread, grow, and become hard.

Gum disease, tooth decay, and bad breath can occur.

Good vs. Bad Mouth Bacteria

We all have millions of bacteria in our mouths.

Some good bacteria and some bad bacteria

good-purple-cropped-bacteria-illustrations-purchasedbad-green-cropped-bacteria-illustrations-purchased

It’s important to have more good bacteria then bad acid producing bacteria to prevent tooth decay and pH balance saliva!

Some types of bacteria that cause tooth decay:

Salivary Mutans Streptococci and Lactobacilli
